Romantic and Historic Sissinghurst and Pashley
| |
Why not combine your trip to Pashley with a visit to Sissinghurst Castle and Gardens?
The famous garden at Sissinghurst Castle was first created in the 1930s by the diplomat Harold Nicolson and his poet wife, Vita Sackville-West. Drawn to the ruins of the Elizabethan courtyard house which was once owned by Vita's ancestors, Harold and Vita were inspired by the farmland around the house and the opportunities that the empty plot posed.
Harold and Vita quickly created a juxtaposition to the working farm around them, with the elegance of the classical lines favoured by Harold and the romanticism of Vita's flamboyant use and profusion of colour and planting. Paying visitors came from 1937 onwards, depositing a shilling in an old tobacco tin, often seeing Harold and Vita at work in their garden.
Refreshments, not included in the price, can be enjoyed in Pashley's Garden Room Café or in Sissinghurst's Granary restaurant (refreshments at Sissinghurst must be pre-booked). £18.40* per person, or £8.50* for members of the National Trust.
